You should get your eyes checked often to make sure they are always healthy, make sure you are checking in a registered health care center. And just as it is necessary to keep your body healthy, you also need to keep your eyes healthy.
Don’t take your eyes for granted. Follow these tips to keep your eyes healthy.
1. Eat Well
Good eyesight begins with the food you eat. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, lutein, zinc might help fight off age-related vision problems. To maintain good eyesight, eat:
- Green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach.
- Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
- Tuna, salmon, and other oily fish
- Oysters and pork
- Eggs, nuts, beans, and other nonmeat protein sources
A healthy diet also helps you stay at a healthy weight. That reduces your chances of obesity and other related diseases which is the leading cause of blindness.
2. Use Safety Eye Wear
If you use dangerous materials on your job or at home, wear protection glasses or protective goggles.
Sports like ice lacrosse, racquetball, and hockey can also lead to eye damage. Wear eye protection glasses. Helmets with shielding face masks or sports goggles with polycarbonate eyeglasses will guide your eyes.
3. Look Away From The Computer Screen
Gazing at your computer or phone screen for too long can cause:
- Dry eyes
- Blurry vision
- Neck pain
- back pain
- shoulder pain
To protect your eyes:
- Make sure your glasses or contact lenses prescription is up to date and also good for looking at a computer screen.
- If your eye pain won’t go away, talk to your medical doctor about computer glasses.
- Move your computer screen so your eyes are leveled with the top of the monitor.
- Choose a comfortable and supportive chair.
- If your eyes go dry, blink more, or try using fake tears.
- Rest your eyes every 20-30 minutes. Get up at least every 2-3 hours and take a 15-minute break.
4. Wear Sun Glasses
The right sunglasses will help guard your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV rays exposure raises your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration.
You should wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It’s however a good idea to wear sunglasses for extra protection.
5. Quit Smoking
It makes you more prone to get cataracts, harm your optic nerve, and macular degeneration, and many other medical problems.
Ask your doctor for help If you find it hard to quit smoking.
6. Get Regular Exercise
Exercise may help to limit or control diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. These conditions can lead to some eye problems. So if you exercise frequently, you can reduce your risk of getting these eye problems.

Everyone needs a regular eye exam. It helps guard your sight and lets you see your best.
